Carne en bistec is thin beef simmered with tomatoes and onions until saucy and tender. Serve it with rice, avocado, and plantains.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 lb thin sirloin or round steak
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp cumin
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tbsp oil
- 1 large onion, sliced
- 3 tomatoes, chopped
- 1/2 cup water or beef broth
- 2 tbsp chopped cilantro
- Cooked rice, avocado, and sweet plantains, for serving
Directions
- Season beef with salt, pepper, cumin, and garlic.
- Heat oil in a large skillet. Sear beef briefly on both sides, then remove.
- Add onion and tomatoes to the same skillet. Cook until softened.
- Return beef to the skillet and add water or broth.
- Cover and simmer 20 to 25 minutes, until the beef is tender and the sauce thickens.
- Top with cilantro and serve with rice, avocado, and plantains.
Mood Messy Tip
Thin steak works best because it gets tender faster and soaks up the tomato-onion sauce.
