Ingredients
- 3 pounds potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
- 1 tablespoon salt, for boiling water
- 6 tablespoons butter
- 3/4 cup warm milk or half-and-half
- 1/4 cup sour cream, optional
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Add potatoes to a pot and cover with cold water. Season water with salt.
- Boil until potatoes are fork-tender, 15 to 20 minutes.
- Drain well and return potatoes to the warm pot for 1 minute to dry slightly.
- Mash with butter.
- Stir in warm milk or half-and-half until creamy.
- Add sour cream if using, then season with salt and pepper.
