Creamy mashed potatoes

These creamy mashed potatoes are fluffy, buttery, and full of comfort-food flavor. They work with BBQ, steak, chicken, gravy, cheese, or honestly just a bowl and a spoon.

Ingredients

  • 3 pounds potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
  • 1 tablespoon salt, for boiling water
  • 6 tablespoons butter
  • 3/4 cup warm milk or half-and-half
  • 1/4 cup sour cream, optional
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Add potatoes to a pot and cover with cold water. Season water with salt.
  2. Boil until potatoes are fork-tender, 15 to 20 minutes.
  3. Drain well and return potatoes to the warm pot for 1 minute to dry slightly.
  4. Mash with butter.
  5. Stir in warm milk or half-and-half until creamy.
  6. Add sour cream if using, then season with salt and pepper.
